Fifty Shades Darker 2017
Fifty Shades Darker is a 2017 American erotic romantic drama film directed by James Foley and written by Niall Leonard, based on E. L. James's 2012 novel of the same name. It is the second movie in the Fifty Shades series and follows the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey. The film was produced by Michael De Luca Productions and Trigger Street Productions, and distributed by Universal Pictures. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan play Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey respectively, with Eric Johnson, Eloise Mumford, Bella Heathcote, Rita Ora, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Kim Basinger, and Marcia Gay Harden appearing in supporting roles. The story centers on Ana and Christian as they choose to rebuild their relationship under new conditions—“no rules, no punishments, and no more secrets.”
Following the release of Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015, anticipation grew among fans for a sequel. After the first film’s special screening in New York City in February 2015, work on the next two films started immediately. By November 2015, Foley and Leonard were chosen to direct and write both sequels respectively, with production scheduled to take place back-to-back in 2016. Originally, principal photography was planned to start in Vancouver in June 2015. However, it was delayed because Leonard had not completed the script yet. Ultimately, filming for Fifty Shades Darker and its follow-up Fifty Shades Freed (2018) began on February 9, 2016 in Paris and Vancouver, wrapping up on April 11, 2016. Danny Elfman, who composed music for the first film, returned to score this one.
The movie premiered in Hamburg, Germany on February 7, 2017, and opened in the United States on February 10 through Universal Pictures. Worldwide box office receipts reached $381 million, surpassing its $55 million production budget. Despite this, critics gave it negative feedback regarding its script, acting, and storytelling, although a few performances were noted for their merit. At the 38th Golden Raspberry Awards, the film received nine nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Dornan), and Worst Actress (Johnson). It won two awards: Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, and Worst Supporting Actress (Basinger).
