Blade Runner 2049 2017
Action thrillerMystery, thrillerPsychological thriller
A 2017 American science fiction thriller film, Blade Runner 2049 follows the story of a new "blade runner" named K, played by Ryan Gosling, who discovers a hidden truth that could change everything. This sequel to the 1982 original is directed by Denis Villeneuve and features a screenplay written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, with a story credit given to Fancher. The film stars Harrison Ford alongside Ryan Gosling, with additional roles filled by Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto. Rick Deckard, portrayed by Ford, and Gaff, played by Edward James Olmos, return to their respective roles from the earlier movie.
The idea of continuing Blade Runner was first explored during the 1990s era. Licensing problems prevented progress until Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson secured the rights from Bud Yorkin. Ridley Scott, who had originally directed the first film, left the project as director and became an executive producer instead. Denis Villeneuve took over directing duties. The movie was funded through a collaboration between Alcon Entertainment and Sony Pictures, with financial support also coming from a Hungarian government tax rebate program. Warner Bros., which handled distribution for the previous film, released Blade Runner 2049 in North America on behalf of Alcon, while Sony managed global distribution.
Principal filming occurred primarily at two soundstages in Budapest over four months, beginning in July and ending in November 2016. The movie made its debut at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on October 3, 2017, followed by a U.S. release on October 6. Critics responded positively, appreciating performances, direction, visuals, and loyalty to the original. Nevertheless, it underperformed at the box office, earning $277.9million worldwide compared to its $150–185 million production cost, missing its projected break-even point of $400 million.
Blade Runner 2049 earned multiple awards including two Academy Awards — one for Best Cinematography and another for Best Visual Effects out of five nominations. It also received eight British Academy Film Awards nominations, winning in the categories of Best Cinematography and Best Special Visual Effects.
