A 2017 American musical romantic fantasy film, Beauty and the Beast represents a live-action remake of Disney Animation's 1991 version, which in turn originated from a French fairy tale. The movie was directed by Bill Condon and written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos. In the film, Emma Watson portrays Belle while Dan Stevens plays the Beast, with Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson appearing in supporting roles.

The project was initially revealed in April 2014, with Condon confirmed as director. Casting occurred between January and April 2015, and principal photography happened mainly at Shepperton Studios in England from May through August of that year. The estimated production cost reached approximately $255million.

The film made its world debut at Spencer House in London on February 23, 2017 before premiering in Hollywood at the El Capitan Theatre on March 2. It opened in theaters across the United States on March 17. Critics responded favorably, appreciating performances, musical elements, and visual effects. The movie earned $1.27billion, making it the second most successful film of 2017 and the tenth highest-earning film ever. Within Disney's series of live-action remakes, it ranks as the second most profitable to date. Additionally, the film garnered multiple awards recognition, including nods for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design at the 90th Academy Awards.
