American Made is a 2017 American crime comedy film that follows the story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot turned drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel during the 1980s era. The film was directed by Doug Liman, written by Gary Spinelli and stars Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Alejandro Edda, Mauricio Mejía, Caleb Landry Jones and Jesse Plemons. Seal's transition from pilot to smuggler led him to become an informant for the DEA in order to avoid jail time. The movie premiered in Taiwan on August 18, 2017 before its U.S. release on September 29, 2017. This marked Liman's first film released by Universal Pictures since The Bourne Identity in 2002, and it was shown in 2D and IMAX formats in select theaters. Worldwide box office earnings reached $134 million, with critics offering generally positive feedback, particularly highlighting Cruise's performance.
