Biographical dramaMusical

A 2017 American biographical drama film, All Eyez on Me is directed by Benny Boom. The movie is based on the life and death of rapper Tupac Shakur, named after his 1996 studio album. Demetrius Shipp Jr. portrays Tupac in the film, joined by Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper, and Danai Gurira. Jamal Woolard returns as The Notorious B.I.G., a role he originally played in Notorious (2009).

Development of this Tupac biopic started in 2011, when Morgan Creek Entertainment began working on the project. The film faced delays over many years, with directors like Antoine Fuqua and John Singleton attached at various times before Benny Boom was confirmed as director in November 2015. In December of that year, Shipp Jr., whose father collaborated on music videos with Shakur, was cast in the lead role. Principal photography started shortly after and concluded by April 2016, taking place in Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

All Eyez on Me had its premiere on June 14, 2017 at the Fox Bruin Theater. It was distributed in the U.S. by Lionsgate Films under Summit Entertainment, while Voltage Pictures handled international release on June 16, 2017, which coincided with what would have been Shakur's 46th birthday. The movie failed commercially, earning only $55 million despite a production budget of approximately $40 to 45 million. Critics gave the film largely negative reviews.
