SupernaturalSupernatural horror

A 2021 American supernatural horror film, The Unholy is written, produced, and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos in his first time behind the camera, adapting the 1983 novel Shrine by James Herbert. Sam Raimi produced the project through his Ghost House Pictures banner, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Katie Aselton, William Sadler, Diogo Morgado, Cricket Brown, and Cary Elwes in the cast. The story centers on a fallen journalist (Morgan) who uncovers what appear to be divine occurrences in a New England town, using them to rebuild his reputation, although those events might stem from something more sinister.

The film was originally announced in December 2018 under the name Shrine, with Sony Pictures developing Herbert’s novel into a screenplay. Casting took place between 2018 and 2020, with principal photography starting in Boston but halting on March 14, 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Unholy premiered in U.S. theaters on April 2, 2021. Although it received poor reviews from critics, the movie succeeded at the box office, earning $31 million globally compared to its $10 million production cost.
