A 2021 animated science fiction comedy film, The Mitchells vs. the Machines was directed by Mike Rianda and co-written by co-director Jeff Rowe. Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation produced the movie in association with Lord Miller Productions and One Cool Films. Voice roles include Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Rianda, Eric André, and Olivia Colman, with supporting performances from Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Lo Mutuc, Blake Griffin, Conan O'Brien, and Doug the Pug. The narrative centers on the dysfunctional Mitchell family attempting to save Earth from a global robot uprising.

Rianda developed the concept after finishing work on the animated series Gravity Falls in 2015. The film's announcement occurred in May 2018. A "hand-painted watercolor" visual style was achieved by reusing technology from the earlier Sony Pictures Animation production, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). The musical score was composed by frequent collaborator Mark Mothersbaugh of Lord and Miller.

Originally planned for a theatrical release under the title Connected in 2020 through Sony Pictures Releasing, the film's distribution rights were sold to Netflix outside of China due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on theaters. Netflix reverted to the original title by Rianda and Rowe and released it in a limited run within the United States on April 23, 2021, followed by a streaming release a week later on April 30.

The movie garnered praise for its animation, voice acting, action sequences, themes, humor, and visual effects. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 33rd Producers Guild of America Awards, the 75th British Academy Film Awards, and the 94th Academy Awards, winning the category at the 27th Critics Choice Awards. The film swept all categories it was nominated for at the 49th Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, becoming the second work by Sony Pictures Animation to achieve this feat after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2019. A sequel is currently in development.
