Fantasy actionMartial artsSuperhero
A 2021 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as the title character. The movie was produced by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, marking the 25th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who also wrote the screenplay with Dave Callaham and Andrew Lanham, it includes Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh, Ben Kingsley, and Tony Leung in supporting roles. In the story, Shang-Chi is drawn into a conflict with his father Wenwu (Leung), who leads the Ten Rings terrorist group, and his sister Xialing (Zhang) as they seek out a legendary village.
Development of a Shang-Chi film started in 2001, but serious work began in December 2018 when Callaham was brought on board. Cretton joined in March 2019, and the film's title and main cast were revealed that July. This established connections to the Ten Rings organization already seen across the MCU, as well as the character Wenwu, who was adapted from comic figures Fu Manchu and the Mandarin. The movie is notable as the first Marvel Studios film directed by an Asian filmmaker and featuring a primarily Asian cast. Principal photography began in Sydney in February 2020, but halted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Production restarted in August and wrapped in October, with extra scenes filmed in San Francisco. Fight choreography was handled by Brad Allan and members of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team.
The film had its premiere in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on August 16, 2021, followed by a U.S. release on September 3 as part of Phase Four of the MCU. It earned over $432 million globally, becoming the ninth highest-grossing movie of 2021. The film broke several box office records and received favorable reviews from critics, who particularly appreciated its portrayal of Asian culture, distinguishing it from other MCU films, along with its action sequences and Leung's acting. It earned a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 94th Academy Awards. A follow-up is currently in production.
