Music 2021
Music is a 2021 American musical drama film directed by singer-songwriter Sia. The movie was co-written by Sia and Dallas Clayton, and features Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr. and Maddie Ziegler in leading roles. This project represents Sia's first effort as a feature film director. The story centers on Zu, a recently sober drug dealer who takes on the responsibility of caring for her half-sister Music, a teenage nonverbal autistic girl.
Development of the film started after Sia announced the project in 2015. It initially was conceived as a non-musical production but later transformed into a musical with an expanded budget. Principal photography occurred during mid-2017. A studio album from Sia accompanied the release, featuring several songs composed by 10 specifically for the film.
The movie premiered in Australia on January 14, 2021 through StudioCanal, followed by a one-night showing in select IMAX theaters across the United States on February 10, 2021, and later became available via on-demand platforms on February 12, 2021 from Vertical Entertainment. Despite its release, the film underperformed commercially, earning $645,949 compared to its $16 million budget. Critics largely disliked the movie, particularly criticizing how it portrayed autism.
The film received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical (Hudson). Additionally, it was nominated for four Golden Raspberry Awards, winning Worst Actress for Hudson, Worst Supporting Actress for Ziegler, and Worst Director for Sia. Sharf, Zack.
