Jungle Cruise is a 2021 American fantasy adventure film based on the Disney theme park attraction. The movie was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who also worked with screenwriters Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Michael Green. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti. The story follows the alternate history of a riverboat skipper who journeys through a jungle with a scientist and her brother in search of the Tree of Life. This quest pits them against a German expedition and cursed conquistadors.
Development began in 2004, but the project remained inactive until 2011. An earlier version did not move forward, and in 2015, Johnson joined the production. Blunt and the rest of the cast were added in 2018 during a reimagined version. Principal photography occurred in Hawaii and Georgia from May through September July 30. The film's musical score was composed by James Newton Howard.
After a year of post-production and additional delays caused by the 19 pandemic, Jungle Cruise made its debut at Disneyland Resort on July 24, 2021. It then released in the United States on July 30, available both in theaters and through digital platforms. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and it underperformed at the box office, earning $221 million worldwide compared to a budget of $200 million. The film also generated $66 million during its first 30 days on Disney+ Premier Access.
