Science fiction action

Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 American monster film directed by Adam Wingard. The movie was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It continues the story from Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), making it the fourth film in Legendary's Monsterverse franchise. It is also the 36th film in the Godzilla franchise and the 12th film in the King Kong franchise. The cast includes Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza González, Julian Dennison, Lance Reddick, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir. Brown and Chandler return to their roles from the earlier Godzilla film.

In the story, Godzilla fights Kong after Monarch relocates the ape from Skull Island to a new location in the Hollow Earth. At the same time, another group called Apex Cybernetics tries to get a power source from the Hollow Earth to build a weapon meant to stop Godzilla’s strange attacks.

The project was revealed in October 2015 when Legendary Pictures announced plans for a shared cinematic universe featuring Godzilla and King Kong. A writers’ room was formed in March 2017, and Wingard was named as director in May 2017. Principal filming started in November 2018 across Hawaii, Australia, and Hong Kong, finishing in April 2019.

Originally scheduled for release in November 2020, the film was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Internationally, it opened on March 24, 2021, and in the U.S. on March 31, where it also appeared on HBO Max at the same time. Critics responded positively to its visual effects and action scenes but found fault with the human characters. The movie set multiple box office records during the pandemic era, earning $470 million globally. Its production cost was between $155–200 million, with a break-even point at $330 million, making it the eighth highest-grossing film of 2021. It became a major streaming success, holding the record as HBO Max’s most-watched launch title until Mortal Kombat surpassed it.

A follow-up titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, again directed by Wingard, was released on March 29, 2024.
