ActionAction thriller

F9 (film) is a 2021 American action film that continues the Fast & Furious franchise. It is also known as F9: The Fast Saga or Fast & Furious 9. The movie was directed by Justin Lin, who worked alongside Daniel Casey on the screenplay. This film serves as a sequel to The Fate of the Furious from 2017, marking the ninth main installment and tenth overall in the series. Starring Vin Diesel as Dominic "Dom" Toretto, the cast includes Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. The plot follows Dom and his team as they try to stop his brother Jakob Toretto and financier Otto from activating Project Aries, an advanced weapons program.

A ninth film had been in development since 2014. Lin was officially confirmed as director in October 2017, returning to the franchise after directing Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. F9 marks the first time since 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) that Chris Morgan did not write the script. Dwayne Johnson, who appeared in the last four films, was initially announced to return in April 2017, but later confirmed he would not be part of the project by January 2019. The rest of the cast was finalized with John Cena added six months later. Brian Tyler returned to compose the score for the film. Principal photography began in June 2019 and wrapped up in November, with filming locations covering London, Edinburgh, Tbilisi, Los Angeles, and Thailand.

Originally scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on April 19, 2019, the film faced multiple delays due to the release of Hobbs & Shaw (2019), the planned release of No Time to Die (2021), and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It premiered in South Korea on May 19, 2021, followed by a U.S. release on June 25. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, appreciating the stunts, Lin’s direction, action scenes, and cast performances, but criticizing its storyline and changes to familiar tropes. Despite this, it set several pandemic box office records and earned $726.2 million worldwide, becoming the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2021. The franchise continued with Fast X in 2023.
