Dear Evan Hansen 2021
Coming-of-age dramaMusical dramaTeen drama
A 2021 American coming-of-age musical film, Dear Evan Hansen was directed by Stephen Chbosky and written by Steven Levenson, adapting the 2015 stage musical. Ben Platt portrays Evan Hansen, returning to the role first performed on stage. Supporting actors include Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan, Danny Pino, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams. The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2021, followed by a U.S. release on September 24 through Universal Pictures. Financially unsuccessful, it earned $19 million domestically against a production budget ranging from $27 to 28 million. Critics gave the film mostly negative reviews. Some criticism focused on the casting of then 27-year-old Platt in a high school role, with allegations of nepotism due to his father Marc Platt being a producer involved in the production.
