Supernatural horror

A 2021 American supernatural horror film, Candyman is the fourth entry in the Candyman series and a direct follow-up to the 1992 original. The film was directed by Nia DaCosta, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. Based on Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden," it is set between the films Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman 3: Day of the Dead (1999). The cast includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo, with Vanessa Williams, Virginia Madsen, and Tony Todd reprising their roles from the first movie.

Development of a new Candyman film began in early 2000s, when Bernard Rose intended to create a prequel focusing on Candyman and Helen’s relationship. However, the studio rejected this idea, placing the project into development limbo. By 2018, Jordan Peele joined as producer through his company Monkeypaw Productions. In November of that year, Universal Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures became involved, confirming that Peele would produce alongside Rosenfeld while DaCosta was brought on as director. Principal photography started in August 2019 and concluded in September 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

The film premiered in the United States on August 27, 2021 through Universal Pictures. Its release was postponed three times from an initial June 2020 date because of the ongoing 19 pandemic. Critics responded positively to the movie, especially praising DaCosta's direction and visual approach, as well as its integration of social themes into horror elements. Worldwide box office receipts reached $77 million, following a $25 million budget.
