Action role-playing

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a 2024 action role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts (EA). It serves as the fourth main entry in the Dragon Age series and continues the story from Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014). Players control Rook, a customizable protagonist tasked with stopping the elven trickster god Solas from destroying the world. During this mission, Rook unintentionally releases two additional amoral elven deities, who must also be prevented from taking over. Like its predecessor, the game uses third-person perspective, but moves away from Inquisition's open-world design in favor of discrete levels connected through fast travel. Combat focuses more on combo abilities rather than tactical depth.

Development started in 2015 and faced delays and staff changes along the way. It was initially conceived as a live-service title but later transformed into a single-player experience after EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) proved successful. The combat system draws influence from Sony’s God of War (2018). Originally named Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2022, the game was renamed Dragon Age: The Veilguard in June 2024.

The Veilguard released on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on October 31, 2024. Its launch represented the largest Steam release for a BioWare title at the time, reaching 1.5 million players across all platforms by December 31 2024, although this fell short of EA’s targets. Critics gave the game generally positive feedback. It earned Outstanding Video Game at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards and Game of the Year at the Gayming Awards, received nods at The Game Awards, Golden Joystick Awards, and DICE Awards, and appeared on multiple 2024 year-end best-of lists.

This title marked the last game in the Dragon Age series and BioWare's final project before the studio closed down in 2026.
