Crypt Custodian 2024
Crypt Custodian is a 2024 Metroidvania video game developed independently by Kyle Thompson and published by Top Hat Studios. This top-down single-player game puts players in control of Pluto, a black cat who dies and is assigned to tidy up the underworld. Using his broom, Pluto sweeps trash, battles foes, befriends other beings, and attempts to escape death. The gameplay includes abilities, enhancements, power-ups, and collectibles that players can acquire through currency, exploration, enemy combat, or puzzle-solving. The map consists of themed zones that unlock progressively during the storyline. The game offers three primary difficulty settings along with extra modes.
This is Thompson’s third standalone title, following Sheepo (2020) and Islets (2022). Crypt Custodian launched on 27 August 2024 for PC (Steam), Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A physical release for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch came out on 29 August 2025. Critics responded positively overall, highlighting the charm, story, characters, visuals, sound, and environment design. Some noted concerns about difficulty progression and repeated zone layouts. It was seen as a solid entry point into the Metroidvania genre.
