Horror

Anthology of the Killer is a series and collection of nine horror comedy games released for free on Game Jolt between 2020 and 2024. The first game, Voice of the Killer, came out in December 2020, followed by a paid collection in May 2024 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. A port to Nintendo Switch and PS5 was later released in April 2026. Developed by Irish independent studio Stephen Gillmurphy under the pseudonyms "garmentdistrict" and "thecatamites", the series consists of nine horror games that were made available at no cost during the specified time period. The games star BB, a young woman who is a college student living in a city full of serial killers. She searches her environment for “spooky” material to write about in her zine. Throughout the nine games, BB finds herself in strange and perilous situations caused by her interactions with various serial killers and other creatures. Stephen Gillmurphy created the game series due to his interest in combining humor, horror, surrealism, and mystery to tell strange stories featuring BB as a recurring heroine. He aimed to balance the humor and horror elements to form a continuous cycle between them. His design approach involved mixing visual components like drawings with improvised level layouts to enhance the collection’s bizarre tone. Critics have praised the series for its blend of comedy and horror along with its overall surreal style, particularly highlighting its visuals and humorous dialogue. At the 2024 Independent Games Festival (IGF), Anthology of the Killer received the Nuovo Award and was also nominated for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and another award for Excellence in Visual Arts.
