Star Wars Jedi: Survivor 2023
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a 2023 action-adventure video game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It follows up Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019), set five years later in the story, continuing the journey of young Jedi Knight Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan). In this game, Cal and his allies attempt to endure under the rule of the Galactic Empire while pursuing a hidden planet that may offer safety for those fighting the regime. The game's design draws from Metroidvania influences, integrating combat with lightsaber and Force abilities, platforming elements, and puzzle-solving mechanics similar to its predecessor.
Work on the project started in late 2019 and continued for three and a half years, with Stig Asmussen returning as director. This title marked the final Star Wars game released by EA under its 10-year licensing agreement with Lucasfilm. The developers aimed to increase the scope and scale of the experience compared to Fallen Order, refining earlier gameplay systems while adding new features like AI-controlled companions. Narrative development occurred closely with Lucasfilm, resulting in a much darker tone than the first game. Cal faces internal conflict over the hopelessness of rebellion and the Empire's control, encountering various antagonists who contrast his journey.
The game was revealed in May 2022 and launched on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S on April 28, 2023. Additional versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One released on September 17, 2024. Critics responded positively to Survivor, praising the characters, combat, level layout, and soundtrack, generally viewing it as an upgrade from the prior title. However, the PC edition received criticism due to technical problems. Commercially, it succeeded for EA and earned multiple award nominations, including Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2023 and Adventure Game of the Year at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. A follow-up title is currently in development, intended as the conclusion to the Jedi trilogy.
