Marvel's Spider-Man 2 2023
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a 2023 action-adventure video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It uses the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man as its foundation, with a story that draws from the extensive comic book lore and various media adaptations. This title marks the third installment in the Marvel's Spider-Man series, continuing directly from Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020). The storyline centers on Peter Parker and Miles Morales encountering Kraven the Hunter, who turns New York City into a hunting arena for powerful beings; and the alien Venom symbiote, which attaches itself to Peter and alters his behavior, putting his personal connections at risk.
Gameplay expands upon what was introduced in earlier entries, emphasizing the distinct play styles of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as Spider-Men. The game enhances their movement and fighting skills, adding new web-based tools and suits that become available during story progression. It also includes the former Spider-Man's symbiote suit, offering Parker abilities from his previous playable appearances. Similar to its predecessors, non-main story content involves finishing side quests and collecting items spread across the open world. Players can alternate between Parker and Morales to fulfill specific tasks unique to each character, each with their own set of special capabilities.
Talks about a sequel began during development, with hints at future storylines teased both in this game and in Miles Morales. The title was officially announced in September 2021. Creative director Bryan Intihar, game director Ryan Smith, narrative lead Jon Paquette and art director Jacinda Chew from Insomniac Games all return from the previous titles, while voice actors Yuri Lowenthal, Nadji Jeter and Laura Bailey reprise their roles as the main cast. Jim Pirri and Tony Todd provide voices for Kraven and Venom respectively.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 launched on PlayStation 5 on October 20, 2023, later being ported to Windows by Nixxes Software on January 30, 2025. Critics widely praised the game for its storytelling, character development, and gameplay mechanics, although some found the writing flawed. It earned multiple year-end awards and won six categories at the 27th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, including Action Game of the Year. The title also appeared on numerous "best games of 2023" lists. Within 24 hours of release, it sold over 2.5 million copies, and more than five million within 11 days, making it the top-selling game on the console and the fastest-selling first-party title in PlayStation history. As of April 20, 2024, the game has achieved sales exceeding 11 million units.
