Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is a 2023 role-playing video game developed by Tose and published by Square Enix. It represents the seventh entry in the Dragon Quest Monsters franchise, succeeding Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3, and marks the first release outside Japan since Joker 2 in 2011. The Dark Prince launched on Nintendo Switch in December 2023 and across Android, iOS, and Windows platforms in September 2024. Critics gave the game mixed reviews, while it reached sales of one million copies by January 2024. This title also stands as the final Dragon Quest game released during Akira Toriyama's lifetime.
The game features Psaro, the primary villain from Dragon Quest IV, as its protagonist. The narrative takes place prior to events in Dragon Quest IV. In this story, Psaro seeks to defeat his father, who placed a curse upon him, by becoming a 'monster wrangler'. Game mechanics involve turn-based menu combat and 3D exploration of the overworld. As with earlier titles in the series, players must acquire monsters through force, luring them with meat, or hatching eggs. These creatures are then combined via "synthesis" to form stronger teams capable of facing increasingly difficult opponents.
