Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III 2023
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a 2023 first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision. It marks the twentieth primary entry in the Call of Duty franchise and the third part of the reimagined Modern Warfare series, succeeding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II from 2022. The single-player narrative is set in 2023 and centers on special operations group Task Force 141 as they hunt down Vladimir Makarov, a Russian ultranationalist and extremist aiming to spark a third World War. In addition to the story mode, the game features multiplayer and a cooperative open-world Zombies mode created by Treyarch, the developer of the Black Ops series.
Following completion of Call of Duty: Vanguard in 2021, Sledgehammer Games were tasked by Activision to work on an expansion for Modern Warfare II, which eventually became a standalone title within the Call of Duty line. Early and mid-year leaks led to its official announcement in August 2023 through an in-game event in Call of Duty: Warzone. The game launched on November 10, 2023 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
Upon release, Modern Warfare III garnered mixed reviews, particularly criticizing its campaign. It ranked as the second top-selling title of 2023 in the United States, only behind Hogwarts Legacy. A follow-up titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward, was launched on October 23, 2026.
