History

Lawless Republic: The Rise of Cicero and the Decline of Rome is a 2025 history book written by classics scholar Josiah Osgood.

The book examines the Crisis of the Roman Republic through Senate and court speeches of Cicero, a prominent Roman lawyer, statesman and Republican. It argues that Cicero's political success came not from rule of law but from the breakdown of legal norms due to violence, with his oratory justifying much of this violence that ended the Republic. The work also claims that Cicero's abilities created many enemies.

Though the book does not make comparisons to current times, several reviewers have drawn parallels between Cicero's era and the Trump Presidency.
