The Defector 2023
The Defector is a 2023 alternate history thriller novel written by Canadian retired astronaut and author Chris Hadfield. Published first in October 2023 in the United States by Little, Brown and Company, and later in the United Kingdom by Quercus, it marks Hadfield's second entry in the Apollo Murders series, following The Apollo Murders from 2021 and preceding Final Orbit in 2025. Set in 1973 amid Cold War tensions, the story centers on a Soviet pilot who defects to America with his MiG-25 supersonic aircraft. The novel features multiple real historical figures, with Hadfield confirming that many events portrayed are authentic.
